Behind the scenes

Greg's illustrations are a combination of imagination and observation. Working from photos from his travels, he sketched, developed scenes, and brought the characters of the story to life. For example, the scene where Libby floats through the city was inspired by a particular street corner near the Boston Public Library. Whereas Mal and Sal's house on Gooch street was inspired by two houses, one of which is now torn down, in southern Idaho.

There were numerous opportunities for Greg to illustrate the face of Liberty's crooked father Mal, but because the unknown is often more scary than the known, he chose not to--leaving Mal's identity up to the reader to imagine. Each illustration was carefully composed and each character was thoughtfully designed to contribute to Kelly's written imagery. We hope you enjoy reading this whimsical story as much as Greg enjoyed illustrating it!
